Predictions for the weather in Norrbotten

Predictions for Norrbotten

Temperature and energy needs

The temperature is predicted to increase in a rather linear way until year 2100, when the temperature will be between 4,5-5 degrees warmer. It’s the winter that is going to be much warmer than now with an average temperature that is up to 7 degrees warmer than now, but all the seasons will experience warmer temperatures.

The need for heating will decrease as a direct affect of the milder climate. The need for heating is calculated to decrease by 20-25% until 2100. But more precise and place specific research has to be done to certify those values. Until this day there has been no need for cooling in this area, if the temperature rises as much as predicted, a need for cooling might occur a couple of days a year.

Snow, rain and dry periods

The level of precipitation (snow, rain, hail etc) varies a lot from a year to another. But both scenarios predict an increase until year 2100 with about 20-30%, where most of the increase takes place around 2050.

The increase is predicted for all seasons except summer. In winter the snowfall will be increase by 60%. But since the temperature is predicted to rise, the snow will stay an average of 60-70 days less than the measurements done in 1961-1990. We can already now see that the snow stays almost 20 days shorter than 20 years ago.

The increase in rain and snow fall has a positive effect on limiting the periods where the nature is to dry.  But extreme weather (storm, extreme rain) might occur more often in the future and the average wind speed will increase by 1 m/s.
