 Group Actions in Number Theory

Initial Winter School

18 January - 28 january 2011, Centre Interfacultaire Bernoulli, EPF Lausanne

This winter school is principally aimed at graduate student whose field of interest is related to the GANT semester, but it should also be of interest for more senior participants. The objective is to present the basics of various techniques and methods which are likely to feature prominently during the remainder of the semester, together with their existing applications, and their potential use in the solution of open problems.

The school will cover six topics:

• La conjecture de Sato-Tate (4 hours): J.-P. Serre (Collège de France)
• Sieve methods (8 hours): É. Fouvry (Orsay), E. Kowalski (ETHZ)
• Point counting on algebraic varieties and analytic number theory (6 hours): T. Browning (Bristol), R. de la Bretèche (Paris)
• Modular forms, automorphic forms and automorphic representations (8 hours): E. Lapid (Jerusalem), Ph. Michel (EPFL)
• Point counting on homogeneous varieties:spectral and ergodic theoretic methods (8 hours): M. Einsiedler (ETHZ), S. Mozes (Jerusalem and ETHZ)
  
• Sum-product phenomena, expansion in groups and applications (8 hours): H. Helfgott (Bristol and Paris), P. Varjú (Princeton)

All lectures will be in Room MA 11 (on the first floor of the Mathematics building of EPFL).

People interested in attending the conference are requested to fill the following registration form (deadline 16 january 2011).

Some ressources will available to graduate students and postdoc willing to attend the conference: for this fill the following application form (deadline 1 december 2010). Note (October 12, 2010): for participants requiring a visa to come to Switzerland, it is probably not possible anymore to obtain one in time for the Winter School.
