Assignments 2019: Cultural Data Sculpting

Assignment # 1:  
Understanding media art history. Choose an installation that you have liked and seen over the last two weeks of classes and then explore its media art history origins. Describe the installation, how it functions and what traces you find in the pre-cinematic or cinematic era (10% of total marks)
Given Week 2. Due: 19 March  (Week 5) for presentation in-class 19 March (Week 5). Written PDF (min. two pages + images) submitted for marking.

 

Assignment # 2:
A critical evaluation of Thinking Machines. What are its media strategies, and how do these artworks function in relation to the curatorial mandate? Choose one installation to review that you think best articulates 'computational thinking' (include images) (10% of total marks).
Given Week 3. Due: 19 March (Week 5) for presentation in-class 19 March. Written PDF (min. two pages + images) submitted for marking.

 

Assignment #3:
Design an app for iShoU using the existing tools, to evaluate an installation in either eM+ or ArtLab. Use website login which will be provided and iPads available at eM+ to deploy (10% of total marks).
Given Week 9 (16 April) . Due: 30 April (Week 10) deployed to iPad, as a demonstrator presented in class with presentation of evaluation rationale.

 

Assignment #4: Major project
Part A:
Written design document of chosen project (suggested content PDF). Examples from previous years available on request. (30% of total marks)
Given Week 5 (19 March). Due: 7 May (Week 11) with presentation and written document.
Part B: Practical demonstrator of project application (40% of total marks).
Given Week 5 (19 March). Due: 28 May with demonstrator
