Informations for Users

To simplify the IT administration process, the School of Engineering has to migrate the content of its Windows DOMAIN sti.intranet.epfl.ch to intranet.epfl.ch.  This migration concerns all members of the faculty, end-users, IT Managers, and computers connected to the DOMAIN (mainly Windows OS).  It is related to  the Active Directory infrastructure.

The calendar shows the combination of the availabilities of each in regards to technical prerequisites and time

The preferred time for this is during the academic break

           from the 3rd of June 2013 or the 8th of July till the 13th of September 2013.

The first to kick off the migration is the Neuchâtel staff who are moving to the new building, Microcity, as from September 2013. One novelty in this building is the first implementation of Unified communication and VOIP (Voice over IP)at the School of Engineering. The units concerned should therefore have completed the migration before moving in september 2013.

There are two types of end-users:

Those who use only Active Directory authentication,
all the users of electronic mail (e-mail) EPFL
all users of the Network Access Storage (NAS)
all the users of olympe.epfl.ch (repository for Applications),

And those who have a Computer joined to Active Directory;
[Windows XP]
[Windows 7]

For all users before the migration:

IMPORTANT: Those who have encryted their data on Windows computers with EFS/Bitlocker or another software should decrypt the content before the migration!

and particulary for those who have your PC added in Active Directory:

Windows
The migration is straight forward and transparent for the end-users. However the following propertities cannot be transferred between DOMAINS.
• authentication information of web pages (password);
• authentication information of network shares ;
• private keys associated to EFS certifcates, S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) and others ;
• data protected using the CryptProtectData() function.

Computers disconnected from the network for more than 90 days:
If a computer joined to an Active Directory DOMAIN is not used and remain disconnected for 90 days, it can no longer be used (Tombstone lifetime).
If this is the case, you should restart the process of joining the computer in the Active Directory before the migration.
