ZiviCat - Autonomous Catamaran

The Ecological Engineering Laboratory (ECOL) has been developing an autonomous platform since late 2012. Environmental measurements on Lake Geneva can be performed with this platform. The development involved many EPFL engineers (BSc, MSc) through Civil Service (the alternative to military service in Switzerland).

The project was born from the need of simultaneous undisturbed measurements of many environmental parameters on Lake Geneva. These in-situ data allow to verify and confirm (or not) the numerical models of the lake's dynamics. Detailed knowledge of water dynamics enables the understanding of processes that take place in such large lake and may orient lake management decisions.
