MSc Students
The SMA proposes two masters of Mathematics (Math and Applied Math), a master of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE), and a master in Statistics. The details of ECTS are at the bottom of the page.
Courses and projects
- Courses outside the official list:
- semester project organised
- Repetition of exams of courses in the group "cours à option" (in French)
- Registering for courses and tests
Internships
- Evaluation of the intership (Ing math or CSE)
- Specialisation semester (Statistics)
Master Project (PDM)
Tracks for MSc Math and Applied Math
See https://wiki.epfl.ch/sma/tracks
Students in MSc Math (only) can apply to the "Teaching Specialisation", check the instruction for registering to the class HEP-402
Minors (Math and Ing Math)
MSc Math vs Applied Math (average length 2 to 2.5 years)
Starting September 2017, the orientations in Math and Applied Math have been removed. Instead there are tracks, see above.
The MSc in Math has the following structure:
- 44 ECTS : optional courses: the student chooses the optional classes from the list of courses in math. The tracks are guidelines. Up to 10 ECTS of courses from the math BSc and up to 4 ECTS of master courses from outside math may also count.
- 6 ECTS : SHS
- 10 ECTS : semester project
The MSc in Applied Math (Ingeniérie Mathématique) has the following structure
- 40 ECTS : optional courses. The student chooses the optional classes from the list of courses in math, at least 30 from the list A (applied math). The tracks are guidelines. Up to 10 ECTS of courses from the BSc may also count.
- 4 ECTS : courses engineering among those recommended by SMA
- 6 ECTS : SHS
- 10 ECTS : semester project
- 30 ECTS : internship or Minor in Engineering. If you do a Minor, a short internship is still compulsory, but the 4 ECTS in engineering can be replaced by an optional course in math.
MSc CSE (average length 2 to 2.5 years)
- 60 ECTS: optional courses. The students chooses 24 ECTS of core courses and 36 ECTS of courses in the group "Modeling and Numerical Methods". The student chooses 3 lists out of 4 and completes at least 8ECTS in each list.
- 24 ECTS of projects. The students must do 2 Semester projects and one internship (the internship's duration is between 8 weeks to 6 months. The majority of internships last 6 months).
- 6 ECTS : SHS
No minors are possible with the CSE master
MSc Statistics (average length 2 to 2.5 years)
- 30 ECTS : Core courses. The student must take all core courses from the statistics study plan.
- 24 ECTS : Elective courses. The student chooses the electives from the liste of courses in the statistics study plan.
- 6 ECTS : SHS
- 30 ECTS : Specialization semester or Minor in Engineering. If you do a Minor, a shorter specalization semester is still compulsory.
